FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Mount Rinjani Trekking
Planning a Mount Rinjani adventure? Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about trekking Mount Rinjani with Jou Trekking, including difficulty, safety, equipment, permits, transportation, accommodation, and booking policies.
How difficult is trekking Mount Rinjani?
Mount Rinjani trekking is physically demanding, particularly routes that include the 3,726-meter summit. The trails include long ascents and descents, steep sections, volcanic sand, and uneven terrain.
The 2D1N Summit Trek is especially challenging because the itinerary is compressed into two days. It is best suited to fit and experienced hikers.
The 3D2N Summit Trek is our most popular option because it gives you more time on the mountain and can include the summit, Segara Anak Lake, and hot springs, depending on the selected route.
For travelers who do not want to climb the main summit, the 2D1N Senaru Crater Rim Trek is a great alternative. It still requires a good level of fitness but offers beautiful views without the difficult 3,726-meter summit climb.
Do I need previous trekking experience?
Previous mountain trekking experience is helpful but not always necessary.
Many first-time trekkers successfully complete Rinjani with good preparation and a reasonable level of fitness. However, the summit trek should not be underestimated. We recommend preparing with regular hiking, running, cycling, stair climbing, or other endurance activities before your trip.
Our guides will also adjust the pace according to the ability of the group whenever possible.
Is trekking Mount Rinjani safe?
Safety is one of our main priorities. Our trekking programs are led by experienced local guides who know Mount Rinjani's trails, terrain, and conditions.
Before the trek, we provide a briefing and arrange the required basic medical check-up. Our team also carries basic first-aid supplies.
Mountain conditions can change quickly, so itineraries may need to be adjusted because of weather, trail conditions, volcanic activity, forest fires, or instructions from Mount Rinjani National Park authorities.
Guests should always follow the instructions of their guide, particularly during the summit climb and in steep or exposed areas.
What equipment does Jou Trekking provide?
We provide the main camping equipment needed during your trek, including:
Private trekking tent
Sleeping bag
Mattress and pillow
Toilet tent
Camping table and chairs
Trekking poles
Headlamp
Warm jacket
Gloves
Our porters carry the camping equipment, food, cooking equipment, and drinking water.
What should I bring myself?
We recommend bringing comfortable hiking shoes or trekking boots with good grip, lightweight trekking clothes, warm layers, a waterproof or rain jacket, sun protection, personal medication, toiletries, and a small daypack.
If your itinerary includes Segara Anak Lake and the hot springs, we also recommend bringing swimwear.
There are no charging facilities on the mountain, so bringing a power bank is highly recommended.
Do I need to carry all my belongings?
No. Our porters carry the group camping equipment, food, and water.
You should carry a small backpack containing the personal items you need during the day, such as your jacket, camera, sunscreen, snacks, and other personal belongings.
If you would like someone to carry your personal belongings, an additional personal porter can be arranged for USD 25 per day.
Can I leave my suitcase or large luggage somewhere during the trek?
Yes. You can safely store your larger luggage at our guesthouse in Senaru while you are trekking.
You only need to take the personal items required for your time on the mountain.
For routes finishing in a different location, our team can also coordinate your luggage so it is available after your trek.
How large are Jou Trekking groups?
We specialize in small-group trekking, with a maximum of 4 trekkers per group.
We believe smaller groups provide a better trekking experience, allowing our guides to give guests more attention while maintaining a comfortable pace.
Private trekking tours are also available on request.
Are meals and drinking water included?
Yes. Meals, snacks, fruit, and drinking water during the trek are included.
Our porters carry drinking water and manage the water supply throughout the trek, so you do not need to carry several days' worth of water yourself.
We can also accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets, as well as certain dietary requirements such as gluten-free meals. Please tell us about any dietary restrictions or allergies before your trek.
Is the Mount Rinjani National Park entrance permit included?
For direct bookings with Jou Trekking, the Mount Rinjani National Park trekking permit is included unless your booking confirmation specifically states otherwise.
Please note that National Park permits are issued under the trekker's details. Once a permit has been issued, it is non-refundable, non-transferable, and cannot be rescheduled under the current permit rules.
Bookings made through third-party platforms may have different inclusions, so please check your booking confirmation carefully.
Is transportation and accommodation included?
This depends on the package you select.
Our Trek Only option is designed for travelers who prefer to arrange their own transportation and accommodation.
Our Trek + Transportation & Accommodation package includes accommodation in Senaru for the night before the trek, as well as eligible pick-up and drop-off transportation.
Please check your selected package for the exact inclusions.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Weather on Mount Rinjani can be unpredictable, and conditions can change quickly even when the forecast looks good.
Our guides monitor conditions during the trek and will prioritize safety. If conditions become unsafe, the guide may change the itinerary, delay part of the trek, or advise against continuing to the summit.
If Mount Rinjani National Park officially closes a trekking route because of severe weather, fire, volcanic activity, or another safety issue, we will explain the available options according to the situation and your booking conditions.
What happens if I cannot reach the summit?
Reaching the summit is never guaranteed.
Fitness, altitude, weather, trail conditions, and individual health can all affect whether a trekker reaches the top. Our guides will support and encourage you, but safety always comes before reaching the summit.
Turning around when conditions are unsafe or when your body cannot continue is always the right decision.
What temperature should I expect?
Temperatures vary considerably between the villages, campsites, and summit.
Nights around the crater rim can be approximately 10°C, while temperatures near the summit can fall to around 5°C or lower, especially before sunrise and when it is windy.
Warm layers are therefore essential even though Lombok is generally warm at lower elevations.
Is trekking insurance included?
Basic insurance associated with the National Park permit is included where applicable.
We also offer optional Premium Trekking Insurance, which can provide additional mountain emergency assistance, including helicopter evacuation subject to the insurer's terms and conditions.
The premium insurance currently costs approximately IDR 290,000 per person and provides coverage for trekking trips of up to four days.
We also recommend having your own comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers high-altitude trekking.
Can I fly a drone on Mount Rinjani?
Flying a drone inside Mount Rinjani National Park requires special permission.
The drone permit is separate from the standard trekking permit and is not included in our trekking package. The permit has previously cost approximately IDR 2,000,000, but requirements and fees can change.
Please contact us before your trek if you plan to bring a drone.
What is your booking and cancellation policy?
A USD 40 per person deposit is required to secure a direct booking. The deposit is non-refundable.
Once National Park permits have been purchased, the permit costs are also non-refundable and non-transferable.
Cancellations made close to the trekking date or failure to arrive may be subject to a 100% cancellation charge according to the booking conditions.
Because cancellation terms can vary depending on the package and booking platform, please review the cancellation policy shown on your booking confirmation before making your reservation.
Can I change my trekking date after booking?
Please contact us as soon as possible if your travel plans change.
However, once your National Park permit has been issued, it cannot normally be transferred or moved to another date. A new permit may therefore need to be purchased if you change your trekking date.
Other costs may also apply depending on how close the change is to your scheduled departure.
When should I book my Rinjani trek?
We recommend booking as early as possible, particularly during busy trekking periods.
Mount Rinjani National Park limits the number of trekking permits available each day. Once the permit quota for a particular date is full, we cannot guarantee availability.
Early booking also gives us more time to arrange your guide, porters, accommodation, transportation, dietary requirements, and other special requests.

Reviews
What an unforgettable experience we had doing this. Mario was our guide during the 2day1night trekking. Kind, funny and very smart guy that kept us on the right trek :) He looked over us, cared for us and made sure we had the best experience. The night walk up mountain Rinjani was a tough one, but worth every step.
